Data Privacy Day is an annual National Cyber Security Alliance initiative for online privacy awareness and education. It’s hosted every year on January 28 by Stay Safe Online. This year, the event was once again a huge success, with thousands of web participants. Here’s everything that happened during Data Privacy Day 2019.
Social Media Shares
One of the most popular ways people participated in Data Privacy Day, was through the use of social media channels. Both of the event’s official hashtags, #DataPrivacyDay and #PrivacyAware, were trending across the United States. With the hashtags, users, advocates, companies, and organizations passed along tips, articles, and resources.
Many shared invaluable information:
- Forbes shared insights from the industry’s leading cybersecurity experts;
- CNET reminded us how little privacy we have now;
- and the United Nations unveiled a new map tracking data protection and privacy legislation around the world.
Official Event Live Stream
Data Privacy Day 2019 culminated in an official event live stream. The live stream was held in San Francisco, featuring representatives from NCSA, Verizon, LinkedIn, the Federal Trade Commission, Visa, and Microsoft, among others. They covered an array of topics, from the EU’s GDPR (and its global effects,) and the California Consumer Privacy Act, to cloud security and the implications of future technologies. While the event has of course since ended, you can still watch the live stream on YouTube.
Data Privacy Day Champions
In addition to social media and live-streaming, both organizations and individuals had the option to become Data Privacy Day Champions; IPVanish is one such Champion. Data Privacy Day Champions dedicate themselves to respecting privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling trust. While it’s too late to register as a Champion for 2019, you can still review the Champions Toolkit, which includes privacy tips, statistics, and additional learning resources.
